The Linear Ram

A screw or hydraulic tube pushing between the post and a bracket on the leaf. Cheap, simple, easy to fit and easy to replace. The Articulated Arm

A jointed arm that folds, which lets the drive sit forward of the hinge and clear a wide pillar. It costs more, it is more visible, and it puts a larger load into its mounting because of the leverage in the joint. On masonry that mounting is anchored into the structure rather than fixed to a facing.

The Underground Drive

A unit in a buried box under the hinge, invisible once installed and the usual choice on an ornamental gate where the ironwork is the point.
