Travel Against Force

The travel limit tells the unit where the closed and open positions are. The force setting tells it how hard to push before deciding it has hit something and reversing. One is a distance and one is a threshold. They are set separately and they produce different symptoms when wrong.

Symptoms of a Bad Limit

A leaf that stops an inch short of the catch has its close limit set early. One that arrives and then bounces back has it set late, because the drive keeps pushing after contact and reads the resistance as an obstruction. At the open end, a limit set too far drives the leaf into the stop or past its safe arc.

Symptoms of Bad Force

Too little and the gate reverses partway for no visible reason, most often on a cold morning when everything is stiffer. Too much and the protection is effectively gone, because the drive will push through a bicycle or a person before it decides anything is wrong. The Test That Governs Force

Stand a block on edge in the path of the closing leaf and let the gate meet it. It has to reverse promptly on contact. If it does not, the force is too high whatever the dial reads. Repeat the test after any hardware work, since a change in friction anywhere changes what the motor experiences.

Why Force Is Never the Fix

Almost every request to turn force up is really a dry hinge, a dragging leaf, a post that has leaned, or a track full of grit. Raising the threshold hides all of them and passes the load to a gearbox that will fail. Clear the resistance first, then set force to the lowest value that runs the gate reliably.

After Any Manual Release

Moving the drive by hand loses the stored limits on many controllers. The first automatic cycle after re engaging is when a stale limit drives the leaf into the catch at full speed. Run that cycle with a hand on the stop button rather than from the house.
